Transitions in Life
One of the many things we need help navigating in life is when we are in a “Transition” season. The season could literally be anything. As an example we can use the bridge. We leave an old reality and travel to our new one. In between these realities is the “Neutral Zone”. This is where a coaching conversation and walking with someone is extremely helpful to navigate. Here are some principles to help one understand better.
•Principles of Transition
- While change is usually external, transitions are an internal process to help adapt to change.
- Unless transition occurs, change will not work.
- The starting point for transition is awareness of what you’re leaving behind and being able and willing to let go.
- After letting go, people move into a “neutral zone: which is somewhere between the old reality and the new. The “neutral zone”, while unpleasant, is a place for healing, regeneration, creativity and growth. It’s important to stay in the neutral zone rather than moving out of it too quickly. “We learn the most in the neutral zone”.
- Every aspect of transition is challenging.
- Information is a critical aspect of transition, particularly in families and organizations.
- A new beginning is as challenging as other aspects of transitions because it requires new purpose, new understanding, new attitudes, and new identities.
Life is challenging, period. One of the best things we can do whether it’s with a coach or a confidant, is talk it out. Getting ideas and thoughts out of our heads is the beginning of the process. Turning that verbal processing into action as you create your own step is so incredibly fulfilling.
